Corozal Our first choice advice would be Corozal where Tree of Cortez Development is located, it is Northern Belize near the border with Mexico and truly is your low-cost option if you are looking for waterfront, beach side or just Island style living. It is not technically on the Caribbean but on the Bay of Chetumal though you will see that prices for just about everything from Real Estate to local grocery will be less in Corozal. It is the northernmost district of the nation of Belize. The district capital is Corozal Town. Pre-Columbian Maya ruins are found in Corozal at Santa Rita near Corozal Town, and at Cerros. Due to mild climate, closeness to Mexico and beautiful calmness of Chetumal Bay Corozal became very popular vacation and retirement spot for North American and European ex-pats. Beyond the emerald green waters of the bay, Corozal has much to offer. Four thousand years ago during the Maya Pre-classic periods, Corozal was an important seaport ruled by the Maya Cacique, Na Chan Kan. It survived the Mayan civilization’s decline and the European conquest of the new world. In the 1800’s, Corozal became home to refugees of the Yucatan’s Caste Wars. Then, as now, people have found peace, tranquility and relaxation in Corozal. The Corozal Free Zone is one of the newest attractions in the area for those seeking opportunities in business and industry. The rich history and people (Mayan, Mestizo, East Indian, Chinese, Creole, and Garifuna) make Corozal an interesting place, of great diversity and culture. From Corozal Town the main centre of activity in the district, you can visit fascinating Maya villages, rich culture, rivers and waterways teeming with wildlife and the enchanting Corozal Bay, a sanctuary for manatees with inviting waters for swimming, sailing and other water sports. For those who want to enjoy the beauty of Belize and its rich, diverse culture, come to Corozal.
Cayo If you prefer being surrounded by the rain forest, mountains and rivers, Maya ruins and caves then Cayo remains affordable frontier. The heart of this area are the twin towns of San Ignacio and Santa Elena which both enjoy an Old West feel with tropical flavour! You will find a lot of affordable propeties and raw land and will enjoy huge choice of cheap fresh locally grown food produced predominantly by Mennonites.
Cayes and Southern Belize Cayes - the Reef Islands and Placencia have been more settled and "westernised" but with much higher cost of living and Real Estate prices. If you prefer peace and isolation from "civilised world" then Toledo - the Southern-most district might be your choice with many affordable pieces of Paradise there but it is so remote from the rest of Belize that a trip to Belize City or Chetumal may seem like a huge undertaking!
